NOW SHOWING

PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGNS
June 17 – September 21, 2008
Political campaigning today is highly visible on television and on the Internet, but in years past objects such as buttons, bumper stickers, pins, medals, and yard signs promoted a candidate’s message and encouraged people to vote. This exhibit features collections of campaign materials from past presidential elections including John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Lyndon B. Johnson, as well as a few presidential hopefuls, including Alfred Landon, Eugene McCarthy, and Adlai Stevenson. The exhibit will also feature Colorado election buttons stating: “Bill Armstrong for U.S. Senate,” “Tauer for Your Mayor,” and “Tim Wirth for Congress.” The collections on exhibit are on loan from area collectors. GOOGIE ARCHITECTURE
May 14 – July 13, 2008
The Googie style originated in California in the 1940s and was influenced by the car culture and the Space/Atomic Age. Upswept, angled roofs, geometric shapes, the use of glass, steel and neon, boomerangs, flying saucers, atoms and parabolas are all represented in this photographic tour of Googie architecture and flashy signs along Colfax in the Aurora/Denver area.

UPCOMING SHOWS

COWBOY CARTOONS
July 16-September 21, 2008

EXHIBIT PROGRAM INFORMATION

CHANGING EXHIBITS
Visitors enjoy four major changing exhibits and several smaller displays every year. Each is a perspective on the context of life in America’s Suburbs.

LIVING AURORA

The Living Aurora exhibit will soon undergo renovation. Please visit to see something new as we improve our retelling of Aurora’s story.

PODCASTS

The Aurora History Museum was the first in the state to offer free downloadable audio tours to compliment temporary exhibits. The Museum partnered with history groups such as the Regis University Center for the Study of War Experience and the New York State Museum, local experts such as the DJs of Radio 1190’s Under the Mattress 50s and 60s music show, and local artists such as the electronica band Multicast and the composer Ken Clinton. The result is a series of unique podcasts you can find no where else. View Details.

AHM “CELL” GUIDED TOURS
Enhance your visit to the Museum with a tour on your cell phone. The Living Aurora exhibit now includes live stories and information that can be accessed from any cellular phone or by using one of the Museum’s phones. Hear the accounts of personalities from Aurora’s past, tidbits on life through the ages and tales of the suburbs.

RETURNING DISPLAYS

Several of the Museum’s exhibits return each year including the Gateway to the Rockies Art Exhibit and the Annual Festival of Wreaths.

AROUND THE MUSEUM

Several displays with historical themes are presented throughout the Museum. The Collectors Corner display highlights the artifacts in a local resident’s collection, changing every month. Displays in the From the Collection case, the lobby and the Community Gallery are also featured.

THE HANDS-ON ROOM
Children are engaged in history through direct experiences and at their own pace in this popular attraction. Take some time out from your busy museum visit to watch a movie, interact with games and activities and handle artifacts from the education collection.

OUTREACH DISPLAYS
The Aurora History Museum is in your neighborhood. Discover our changing displays at Town Center at Aurora, as well as the Aurora Municipal Center, Tallyns Reach, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Smoky Hill Branch Libraries.

It is the goal of the Aurora History Museum’s exhibits to educate visitors on Aurora’s place in the greater context of regional, national and international history and culture.
