Red Cross Building and Memorial 525
12862 E. Montview Blvd.
Built: 1918 • Landmarked: 1999
Fitzsimons General Hospital, originally U.S. Army General Hospital No. 21, was established in 1918 as World War I was ending. Colorado’s nationally recognized reputation for the treatment of respiratory illnesses readily served the medical needs of our soldiers returning from Europe. A 595-acre parcel of rural Aurora was purchased on the original site of the A.H. Gutheil Park Nursery and construction of 48 structures quickly began. The Fitzsimons General Hospital continued to grow and expand through the 1920s and 1930s, as well as serving returning soldiers from World War II and Korea. The post was deactivated in 1996, and is currently under redevelopment by a variety of interests including the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority.
Dedicated to the memory of officers, nurses, and enlisted men in the U.S. Army Medical Corps who lost their lives in the line of duty, this beehive-shaped river rock memorial was constructed after World War I.
