Visit the Aurora History Museum for exhibits and displays that tell the story of a surprising depth of history and culture to be found in Aurora. The tales of Aurora’s past accompany learning experiences about the environment, diversity and the context of contemporary life in The American Suburb.

DINE BITS’ AA’ BAHANE: The Story of Navajo Baskets
January 8 – March 21, 2010
Discover the history, symbolism, manufacturing processes and new directions in Navajo basketry through this traveling exhibit from the Anasazi Heritage Center in southwest Colorado. Modern and traditional Navajo baskets on loan from the Denver Museum of Nature & Science and the University of Colorado at Boulder are also be on display.

Mindscapes: The Aerial Photograph of Adriel Heisey
February 23 – April 18, 2010
Adriel Heisey built his own ultra-light aircraft to better experience the vast landscape of the American Southwest. The open craft allows him to photograph his native lands while flying at a variety of altitudes, giving his viewer a new perspective on the Four Corners region. This exhibit of color photographs is on loan from the University of Colorado’s Museum of Natural History in Boulder.

WILDFIRE!
April 6 – July 11, 2010
Are wildfires good for nature? Who fights these fires? What causes wildfires? how do you prevent fires? Wildfires are an influential part of Colorado’s history. A great deal goes into fighting and preventing major wildfire events annually. If you’ve ever asked these questions, com and find out the answers, plus much more.

CHANGING EXHIBITS
Visitors enjoy four major changing exhibits and several smaller displays every year. Each is a perspective on the context of life in America’s Suburbs.

LIVING AURORA

The Living Aurora exhibit will soon undergo renovation. Please visit to see something new as we improve our retelling of Aurora’s story.

TRAVELING EXHIBITS
The Aurora History Museum offers a variety of traveling exhibits for your library, school, museum, community center, etc. Topics include Colorado 10th Mountain Division, Cowboy Cartoons, and Hollywood, Colorado, etc. View Details.

PODCASTS

The Aurora History Museum was the first in the state to offer free downloadable audio tours to compliment temporary exhibits. The Museum partnered with history groups such as the Regis University Center for the Study of War Experience and the New York State Museum, local experts such as the DJs of Radio 1190’s Under the Mattress 50s and 60s music show, and local artists such as the electronica band Multicast and the composer Ken Clinton. The result is a series of unique podcasts you can find no where else. View Details.

AHM “CELL” GUIDED TOURS
Enhance your visit to the Museum with a tour on your cell phone. The Living Aurora exhibit now includes live stories and information that can be accessed from any cellular phone or by using one of the Museum’s phones. Hear the accounts of personalities from Aurora’s past, tidbits on life through the ages and tales of the suburbs.

RETURNING DISPLAYS

Several of the Museum’s exhibits return each year including the Gateway to the Rockies Art Exhibit and the Annual Festival of Wreaths.

AROUND THE MUSEUM

Several displays with historical themes are presented throughout the Museum. The Collectors Corner display highlights the artifacts in a local resident’s collection, changing every month. Displays in the From the Collection case, the lobby and the Community Gallery are also featured.

THE HANDS-ON ROOM
Children are engaged in history through direct experiences and at their own pace in this popular attraction. Take some time out from your busy museum visit to watch a movie, interact with games and activities and handle artifacts from the education collection.

OUTREACH DISPLAYS
The Aurora History Museum is in your neighborhood. Discover our changing displays at the Aurora Municipal Center, as well as the Tallyns Reach, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Smoky Hill Branch Libraries.

It is the goal of the Aurora History Museum’s exhibits to educate visitors on Aurora’s place in the greater context of regional, national and international history and culture.
