In addition, we have a 24-hour job line recording at 303-739-7222, and there is a listing of current vacancies in the Human Resources Department at the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Do I have to live in Aurora in order to work for the city of Aurora?
There is no residency requirement for city of Aurora positions.
How do I apply for a city of Aurora vacancy?
The city would prefer that all of our applicants apply on-line; however, you may apply for a position by visiting our offices at the Aurora Municipal Center, 15151 E. Alameda Parkway. All of our recruitments require that the applicants respond to a supplemental questionnaire, which is included as part of the online application process or may be completed manually in our offices.
What must I include in the application?
It is in the applicants’ best interest to fill out the application completely. You may attach a resume to your applications materials; however, remember that you will be competing with many other applicants through your application materials during the initial screening process and the more thorough and complete your application materials are, the more competitive you become.
What is the EEO information section used for?
In order to comply with Federal EEO-4 reporting requirements and statistical record keeping for the City of Aurora, we ask that applicants voluntarily provide us this information. This information is removed from your application prior to the screening process. You will still be considered for the position for which you apply even if you do not fill out this section; however, if you are hired for the position, we will again request that you provide us with this information.
Do I have to fill out a separate application if I want to be considered for more than one position?
A separate, complete application is required for each position.
Can I attach a resume to my application?
You may attach a resume to your application. While it is not necessary that you do submit a resume, the combination of application and resume may present your knowledge, skills and abilities in a manner that might make you more competitive.
How long does it take to fill a vacancy?
There are many factors which can affect how long it takes to fill a position with the city of Aurora, for example: screening, testing, the hiring department’s schedule, background checks, drug screening, etc. However, it generally takes 4 to 6 weeks after the final filing date to fill a position.
Will I be interviewed when I drop off my resume/application?
No. Before you are interviewed for any position for the city of Aurora, your application must first be reviewed to determine that your application materials meet the established screening criteria.
When will my application be reviewed?
If the recruitment has a final filing date, we do not review any applications until after the date listed. Once this date has passed, we will begin the screening process which can take anywhere from two to10 days, depending upon the number of applications we receive.
If we announce a vacancy “Open Until Filled” we will be reviewing the applications periodically throughout the recruitment.
Who will review my application materials?
A Human Resources Specialist who has been assigned to the recruitment will do the initial screening. Then, depending upon the recruitment, the Specialist will conduct job-related skills testing, consult with the hiring department to establish specific job-related criteria for further screening, or create a list of candidates for interview. Generally, we establish a listing of five to 10 candidates who will be interviewed for each opening. When an applicant is chosen for interview, it can be anywhere from two to five weeks before they will hear from the hiring department.
Will there be testing? How will the testing be conducted?
Some positions that the city of Aurora recruits for require particular knowledge and/or skill that require testing. For example, as part of the screening process, an applicant will be tested for keyboarding skills for a position that requires clerical skills such as typing and/or data entry. These types of skill testing are usually conducted in a group setting using computer keyboards and programs.
Sometimes it is necessary for the hiring department to obtain additional information from the candidate regarding their knowledge, training and/or experience in their field of expertise. This information is usually obtained through the use of a supplemental questionnaire, which is then used as part of the screening process. Other positions may require the candidate to complete an exam to demonstrate their knowledge or skills in a certain field, i.e., equipment operations, surveying or water treatment. These exams are usually given as part of the interview process.
Who will interview me?
Representatives from the hiring department/division will contact the candidates selected for interview and conduct the actual interview. In most cases, the hiring department/division also will make an offer of employment.
Will my application remain “on file”?
Once the job recruitment is closed and the position filled, the “Certification List” or list of candidates selected for interview may remain active for up to six months. It is possible that if the hiring department has another vacancy in the same classification, they may hire from the same list of candidates. We do not match applications to other job vacancies that might occur. If there are other vacancies in the city for which you wish to be considered for, you must complete a separate application for each position.
How do I obtain more information about a particular vacancy?
Our online application process includes the full detailed job description for that vacancy. We also have detailed job descriptions for each of our current job openings available in our offices to anyone who wishes to have a copy.
What will happen if I’m selected for the position?
If you are selected for the position, the hiring department will usually contact you to offer you the position, contingent upon successful completion of the drug screening and criminal background check. This is the time that starting salary and tentative start date are usually discussed. Once the applicant has accepted the offer of employment, the hiring department will contact the Human Resources Department to notify them of their selection. The Human Resources Specialist handling the recruitment will then contact the candidate to schedule them for their physical and pre-employment drug screening. Once the Human Resources Specialist is notified that the candidate is cleared for hire, they will contact the candidate and schedule them for Benefit Orientation. The city of Aurora only starts new hires on Mondays, unless there is a Monday holiday, in which case, they will be started on the Tuesday following the holiday.
Who must take the drug test and criminal background check?
All selected applicants selected for employment must take and pass a drug test and criminal background check.
What will happen if I’m not selected for the position?
If you are interviewed, but not selected, for the position, you will be notified of your status by mail once the selected candidate has completed their physical and pre-employment drug screening. Since the “Certification Lists” can remain active for up to six months, there is a possibility that you might be contacted by the hiring department at a later date if another vacancy occurs in the same department for the same classification.
When is a current employee eligible to apply for promotional opportunities?
Regular employees may apply for promotion or transfer upon completion of their Introductory Period. Temporary full-time employees may apply for regular positions after completing 1040 hours of employment. Temporary part-time employees may apply for regular positions after completing 520 hours.
